Sourcing by role
How to find a finance manager.
Controllers make sure the numbers are right. FP&A explains what they mean. Different temperaments, different people — and one job advert routinely asks for both.
Finance leadership splits into two tracks that reward opposite instincts. The controller track is backward-looking and precision-driven: close the books, satisfy the audit, get the statutory accounts right. The FP&A track is forward-looking and commercial: forecast, model, and explain the business to itself.
Strong practitioners in one are frequently unremarkable in the other, and job adverts that ask for both attract generalists who satisfy neither. Add company-stage scope — where the same title means running an entire function or one reporting area — and the title becomes almost uninformative on its own.
Job titles worth searching
Grouped by what the person actually does, because searching all47 at once produces a result set you cannot triage. Decide which group you need first — that decision does more for the search than any string below.
Core finance leadership
Scope varies enormously by company size. A Finance Manager at a fifty-person company may run the entire function including payroll and compliance, while the same title at a large corporate covers one reporting area within a much bigger team.
- Financial Manager
- Finance Manager
- Finance Director
- Head of Finance
- Chief Financial Officer
- CFO
- Financial Controller
- Group Finance Manager
Control and reporting
Backward-looking: ensuring the numbers are right, the close happens on time, and the statutory and audit requirements are met. Detail-oriented and process-driven, and genuinely different in temperament from the planning side.
- Financial Controller
- Group Controller
- Assistant Controller
- Financial Reporting Manager
- Technical Accounting Manager
- Consolidation Manager
- Statutory Reporting Manager
- Accounting Manager
Planning and analysis
Forward-looking: budgeting, forecasting, modelling, and business partnering. Commercially oriented and communication-heavy, and strong FP&A people are frequently poor at close discipline and vice versa.
- FP&A Manager
- Head of FP&A
- Finance Business Partner
- Commercial Finance Manager
- Financial Planning Manager
- Business Finance Manager
- Strategic Finance Manager
- Revenue Finance Manager
Treasury and capital
A distinct specialisation concerned with cash, funding, and risk rather than reporting or planning. Treasury experience does not develop from general finance management and is genuinely scarce.
- Treasury Manager
- Head of Treasury
- Cash Manager
- Corporate Finance Manager
- Capital Markets Manager
- Investor Relations Manager
- Risk Manager
- Credit Manager
Sector-specific
Where regulatory or accounting complexity gates the role. Banking, insurance, and fund finance involve regulatory reporting regimes that general corporate finance never encounters, and the domain is usually the real requirement.
- Fund Accountant
- Fund Controller
- Regulatory Reporting Manager
- Insurance Finance Manager
- Banking Finance Manager
- Project Finance Manager
- Revenue Recognition Manager
- Tax Manager
Operational and systems
Where finance meets process and systems. Shared services and finance transformation roles suit people who improve how finance runs rather than producing the numbers themselves.
- Finance Operations Manager
- Shared Services Manager
- Finance Systems Manager
- Finance Transformation Manager
- Process Improvement Manager
- Order to Cash Manager
- Procure to Pay Manager
Qualifications, frameworks and what they signal
Finance qualifications are region-locked and track-specific: they tell you where someone trained and, usefully, whether they came up through statutory reporting or management accounting.
| Credential | Full name | Region | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPA | Certified Public Accountant | United States | State-licensed and the standard US credential for controller-track roles. Not recognised as a UK qualification. |
| ACA / ACCA | UK chartered accountancy qualifications | UK and international | ACA usually signals practice and audit training; ACCA is the more internationally portable. Both are common on controller-track CVs. |
| CIMA | Chartered Institute of Management Accountants | UK and international | Management accounting focused, so CIMA-qualified candidates skew toward FP&A and commercial finance rather than statutory reporting. |
| CFA | Chartered Financial Analyst | International | Investment analysis focused. Relevant for corporate finance, treasury, and investor relations rather than for controller roles. |
| CMA | Certified Management Accountant | United States | The US counterpart to CIMA's territory, common in manufacturing and cost-focused environments. |
| MBA | Master of Business Administration | International | Common on the FP&A and strategic finance track, less so on the controller track, where the accountancy qualification carries more weight. |
| IFRS / GAAP | Reporting framework experience | International | Not a credential but a practical requirement. Someone trained only in one framework needs time to become fluent in the other, particularly for technical accounting roles. |
| SOX | Sarbanes-Oxley control experience | United States | Required for US public company finance roles. Genuine SOX experience is specific and frequently the actual requirement behind a controller advert. |
Where finance managers actually are
Professional bodies are the most direct source, publishing committee members, event speakers, and regional activity while verifying the qualification by definition. ICAEW, ACCA, AICPA, and CIMA all maintain this kind of visible member activity, and it identifies engaged professionals rather than merely qualified ones.
Practice firms remain the traditional pipeline into controller roles. Audit-trained accountants typically move in-house at manager level, and naming the firms directly works considerably better than searching for 'Big Four', which mostly returns commentary about the firms rather than people who worked there.
Acquisitions and mergers are the reliable availability event. They consolidate finance functions and displace experienced people, frequently ones who carry integration and due diligence experience that is genuinely valuable and hard to acquire otherwise. These are publicly announced, which makes the timing predictable.
Boolean search strings
Written to be pasted as-is. Each one is built around an intent rather than a platform, since the useful question is what you are trying to find, not which site you happen to be on.
LinkedIn profiles, direct X-ray
Google (LinkedIn)site:linkedin.com/in/ ("financial controller" OR "FP&A manager" OR "finance director") (CPA OR ACA OR ACCA OR CIMA) "{city}"Productive, since finance professionals maintain complete profiles and put qualifications in headline text. LinkedIn no longer indexes titles and locations, so the qualification acronyms carry the search — which is appropriate, as they also indicate which track the person is on.
Controller-track candidates
Google("financial controller" OR "reporting manager") ("month-end close" OR "statutory accounts" OR "audit" OR "consolidation" OR "SOX") -jobs -courseClose and statutory vocabulary identifies the reporting track decisively. These are the people who ensure the numbers are right, which is a different job from explaining what they mean.
FP&A and commercial finance
Google("FP&A" OR "finance business partner" OR "commercial finance") ("forecasting" OR "budgeting" OR "modelling" OR "variance") -jobs -coursePlanning vocabulary identifies the forward-looking track. Business partnering in particular indicates someone comfortable working with non-finance stakeholders rather than within the finance function.
Practice-trained candidates moving in-house
Google("audit manager" OR "audit senior" OR "assurance") (Deloitte OR PwC OR KPMG OR EY OR BDO OR "Grant Thornton") ("moving in-house" OR "industry") -jobsPractice-trained accountants are the traditional pipeline into controller roles, and the move in-house typically happens at manager level. Naming the firms works better than searching 'Big Four'.
Systems-experienced finance managers
Google("SAP" OR "Oracle" OR "NetSuite" OR "Workday Financials" OR "Dynamics 365") ("finance manager" OR "controller" OR "implementation") -jobs -consultantERP experience matters practically, particularly where a system implementation is planned. Finance managers who have run a migration have unusual and specific value.
Sector specialists in regulated finance
Google("finance manager" OR controller) ("Solvency II" OR "Basel" OR "FCA" OR "regulatory reporting" OR "fund accounting") -jobs -consultingRegulatory reporting regimes in banking, insurance, and funds take a long time to learn, and the domain vocabulary is a precise filter for candidates who already have it.
Finance leaders at companies being acquired
Google("acquisition" OR "acquired by" OR "merger" OR "integration") ("CFO" OR "finance director" OR "financial controller") "{city}" 2025..2026Acquisitions consolidate finance functions and displace experienced people, often with valuable integration and due diligence experience. Publicly announced and predictable.
Professional body members and speakers
Google(site:icaew.com OR site:accaglobal.com OR site:aicpa.org OR site:cimaglobal.com) ("member" OR "speaker" OR "committee") "{city}"Professional bodies publish committee members, event speakers, and regional activity. These are qualified, engaged professionals whose credentials are verified by membership.
Mistakes that cost the most time
Treating controller and FP&A as one talent pool
Controllers ensure the numbers are right — close discipline, statutory compliance, audit readiness. FP&A explains what the numbers mean and what happens next — forecasting, modelling, business partnering. These reward different temperaments, and strong practitioners in one are frequently unremarkable in the other. Establish which the role actually needs before sourcing.
Reading the title without the company size
A Finance Manager at a small company may run the entire finance function including payroll, tax, and compliance. The same title at a large corporate may cover one reporting area with a specialist team around it. Scope, headcount, and what the person personally owned tell you far more than the title or the years.
Ignoring the region-locked qualifications
CPA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA, and CA come from different bodies with different scopes, and several are region-specific. They also indicate different tracks — CIMA skews toward management accounting and FP&A, ACA toward practice-trained statutory reporting. Treating them as an interchangeable list of letters produces mismatched shortlists.
Overlooking the reporting framework gap
A candidate trained solely in US GAAP needs genuine time to become fluent in IFRS, and vice versa. For technical accounting and group reporting roles this matters considerably. It rarely appears as a requirement in adverts and frequently surfaces as a problem after hiring.
Missing the timing of the finance calendar
Finance professionals are effectively unavailable during year-end close and audit periods, and bonus timing strongly influences when they will move. Approaches land far better immediately after a close or after bonuses are paid, which is a scheduling decision rather than a sourcing one.
Underestimating ERP implementation experience
A finance manager who has run a system migration has dealt with data integrity, process redesign, and stakeholder resistance simultaneously. Where an implementation is planned, that experience is worth more than an additional year of routine management, and it is rarely asked about.
Common questions
- What job titles should I search for when hiring a financial manager?
- Search the track rather than the generic title. For the reporting and control side, Financial Controller, Group Controller, Financial Reporting Manager, and Technical Accounting Manager. For planning, FP&A Manager, Finance Business Partner, and Commercial Finance Manager. Treasury and corporate finance use their own terms — Treasury Manager, Corporate Finance Manager, and Investor Relations Manager. In regulated sectors, Regulatory Reporting Manager and Fund Controller identify people with domain knowledge that takes years to build.
- What is the difference between a financial controller and an FP&A manager?
- A controller looks backward and ensures accuracy — running the month-end close, producing statutory accounts, managing audit, and maintaining controls. An FP&A manager looks forward — budgeting, forecasting, modelling scenarios, and partnering with the business to explain what the numbers mean. Both are essential and they need different temperaments: controllers reward precision and process discipline, FP&A rewards commercial judgement and communication. Strong practitioners in one are frequently unremarkable in the other, so the role must specify which it needs.
- How do finance qualifications differ across regions?
- They are separate qualifications from separate bodies, not tiers of one. CPA is a US state licence. ACA from ICAEW and ACCA are UK-based, with ACCA more internationally portable, and both usually indicate practice-trained statutory reporting backgrounds. CIMA covers management accounting, so CIMA-qualified candidates skew toward FP&A and commercial finance rather than statutory work. CFA is investment focused and relevant to treasury and corporate finance rather than controller roles. Because several are region-locked, pair any qualification term with a location term.
- When is the best time to approach finance candidates?
- After a close, and after bonuses. Finance professionals are effectively unavailable during year-end close and audit periods, when workload peaks and taking time for interviews is impractical. Bonus timing matters at least as much — many will not move until their bonus has been paid, so approaches landing shortly afterwards convert considerably better. This is a scheduling consideration rather than a sourcing technique, but it affects outcomes more than most search refinements do.
- Where can I find finance managers outside LinkedIn?
- Professional bodies publish committee members, regional event speakers, and member directories — ICAEW, ACCA, AICPA, and CIMA all do this, and membership verifies the qualification for you. Practice-trained accountants at audit firms are the traditional pipeline into controller roles, typically moving in-house at manager level. Acquisitions and mergers are a reliable availability event, consolidating finance functions and displacing experienced people who often carry valuable integration and due diligence experience.
The method behind the strings
Sourcing, in full.
Full Stack Recruiter devotes its first seven chapters to search: Boolean fundamentals, search engines beyond Google, research sources, contact discovery, and responsible public-source research. The titles change by role; the method under them does not.
