Sourcing by role
How to find an LPN or LVN.
Same licence, two names — LVN in California and Texas, LPN everywhere else. Search one and you find nothing in the other market.
The most common LPN sourcing error takes ten seconds to fix. California and Texas call this licence Licensed Vocational Nurse; the rest of the country calls it Licensed Practical Nurse. It is the same qualification, and a search using only one term returns almost nothing in the other market.
The second error is structural. Acute care hospitals have largely moved to registered nurse staffing, so recruiters applying a hospital-nursing model look in settings that barely employ LPNs any more. The real market is skilled nursing, long-term care, clinics, and home health — and in that market, schedule moves people more reliably than pay.
Job titles worth searching
Grouped by what the person actually does, because searching all45 at once produces a result set you cannot triage. Decide which group you need first — that decision does more for the search than any string below.
Core titles
The same licence under two names: most states use LPN, while California and Texas use LVN. A search that includes only one term returns nothing in the other market, which is the most common error with this role.
- Licensed Practical Nurse
- LPN
- Licensed Vocational Nurse
- LVN
- Practical Nurse
- Vocational Nurse
- Licensed Practical Nurse I
- Charge LPN
Long-term and post-acute care
Where most LPN employment now sits, and where they often carry substantial responsibility including med passes for large resident groups. Acute care hospitals have largely moved away from LPN roles, so this is the primary market rather than a secondary one.
- LPN - Skilled Nursing
- Long Term Care LPN
- Nursing Home LPN
- Rehabilitation LPN
- Memory Care Nurse
- Assisted Living Nurse
- Post-Acute Care LPN
- Subacute LPN
Clinic and outpatient
Growing as physician practices expand. These roles offer weekday hours without weekends or nights, which makes them highly sought by LPNs leaving facility shift work — and means they rarely stay vacant long.
- Clinic LPN
- Office Nurse
- Ambulatory Care LPN
- Occupational Health LPN
- Urgent Care LPN
- Primary Care LPN
- Specialty Clinic Nurse
Home health and community
Independent work with a single patient or small caseload, often including private duty and paediatric shift cases. Suits LPNs who prefer autonomy, and the travel and scheduling structure differs enough that it attracts a distinct population.
- Home Health LPN
- Private Duty Nurse
- Pediatric Home Care Nurse
- Hospice LPN
- Visiting Nurse
- Community Health LPN
- Case Management LPN
Specialty and certified
Where additional certification expands scope or pay. IV therapy certification in particular matters because many states restrict LPN IV administration unless separately certified, and wound care is a genuine specialisation in long-term care.
- IV Certified LPN
- Wound Care Nurse
- Infusion LPN
- Dialysis LPN
- Corrections LPN
- Behavioural Health LPN
- Medication Aide Supervisor
- MDS Coordinator
Adjacent and transitional
Roles LPNs come from and move toward. A large share of LPNs are actively studying for RN licensure, which is central to how this role should be recruited and retained — the bridge programme is often the deciding factor.
- Certified Nursing Assistant
- CNA
- Medication Aide
- Patient Care Technician
- LPN to RN Student
- Nursing Student
- Registered Nurse
Licences, certifications and scope
The licence permits practice, but what it permits varies by state — particularly around IV administration, which many states gate behind a separate certification.
| Credential | Full name | Region | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| LPN / LVN | Practical or vocational nurse licence | US, state-issued | Issued per state and publicly verifiable. LVN is the term in California and Texas; LPN elsewhere. The licence is the same level of qualification. |
| NCLEX-PN | National Council Licensure Examination, Practical Nurse | United States | The licensing examination. Relevant when sourcing new graduates, whose availability depends on exam sittings and results. |
| NLC | Nurse Licensure Compact | US, participating states | Covers LPN/LVN as well as RN licences in participating states, allowing multistate practice. Confirm both home and destination state participation. |
| IV therapy | IV therapy certification | US, varies by state | Many states restrict LPN intravenous administration unless separately certified. A genuine differentiator that directly expands what the nurse may do. |
| Wound care | Wound care certification (WCC) | United States | Valuable in long-term care where pressure injury management is a major clinical and regulatory concern. |
| MDS | Minimum Data Set certification | United States | MDS coordination drives facility reimbursement in skilled nursing. LPNs with this experience are scarce and command a premium. |
| BLS | Basic Life Support | International | Universal baseline. Absence is an administrative matter rather than a screening signal. |
| State scope | State scope of practice rules | US, varies | What an LPN may do — assessment, IV push, care plan initiation — varies by state and setting. Verify locally rather than assuming national uniformity. |
Where LPNs actually are
Practical nursing programmes are the most reliable pipeline. They graduate cohorts on a predictable schedule, and new graduates need a first employer willing to orient them — which makes a standing programme relationship far more valuable than any individual search. Programme Facebook groups are unusually active for this population.
State boards of nursing verify licence status, expiry, and discipline history in seconds, which removes the primary screening risk. Use them for verification of named candidates rather than for building outreach lists, since bulk harvesting a licence registry creates a compliance problem.
Two events reliably release experienced LPNs: facility closures and ownership changes. Skilled nursing consolidation means these happen frequently, and ownership changes in particular prompt voluntary departures even when no jobs are lost. Separately, LPNs enrolled in RN bridge programmes are a distinct and highly winnable population — tuition support and clinical-friendly scheduling recruit them more cheaply than salary competition.
Boolean search strings
Written to be pasted as-is. Each one is built around an intent rather than a platform, since the useful question is what you are trying to find, not which site you happen to be on.
LinkedIn profiles, direct X-ray
Google (LinkedIn)site:linkedin.com/in/ ("LPN" OR "LVN" OR "licensed practical nurse") "{city}"Weak for this population, which maintains LinkedIn profiles far less than corporate workers, compounded by LinkedIn no longer indexing titles and locations. Occasionally surfaces LPNs in case management or coordinator roles. For volume hiring, the nursing programmes and facility channels below are the actual market.
Licensed nurses via state board verification
Google(site:*.gov OR site:nursys.com) ("practical nurse" OR "vocational nurse" OR LPN OR LVN) ("license verification" OR "licensee") "{state}"State boards publish licence status, expiry, and discipline history. Use it to verify a named candidate quickly rather than to build outreach lists, which creates compliance problems.
IV-certified and specialty LPNs
Google("IV certified" OR "IV therapy" OR "wound care certified" OR "MDS") ("LPN" OR "LVN") "{city}" -jobs -course -schoolThese certifications expand legal scope and are held by a minority, which makes them a viable search on their own. Excluding schools is essential since training providers dominate the terms.
Practical nursing programme graduates
Google("practical nursing program" OR "LPN program" OR "vocational nursing") ("graduate" OR "pinning" OR "class of") "{city}" (site:edu OR site:facebook.com)Programmes graduate cohorts on a predictable schedule, and new graduates need a first employer willing to orient them. A standing programme relationship is the most reliable pipeline for this role.
LPNs seeking clinic hours
Google("LPN" OR "LVN") ("no weekends" OR "clinic hours" OR "leaving bedside" OR "day shift") "{city}" -jobs -hiringSchedule is the dominant motivator for LPNs leaving facility work. A weekday clinic role pitched on hours rather than pay converts unusually well against long-term care competitors.
Facilities closing or changing ownership
Google("nursing home" OR "skilled nursing" OR "assisted living") ("closing" OR "closure" OR "new ownership" OR "CMS") "{state}" 2025..2026Facility closures and ownership changes displace experienced licensed staff who are already local. Ownership changes in particular prompt voluntary departures even when jobs are not lost.
LPNs in bridge programmes
Google("LPN to RN" OR "LVN to RN" OR "bridge program") ("student" OR "enrolled" OR "currently") "{city}" -jobs -tuitionA large share of LPNs are studying for RN licensure. Employers offering tuition support and flexible scheduling around clinicals win these candidates on terms that cost less than salary competition.
Home health and private duty nurses
Google("private duty" OR "home health" OR "pediatric home care") ("LPN" OR "LVN") "{city}" -jobs -agencyHome care LPNs work independently with small caseloads and are a distinct population from facility nurses, often preferring the autonomy and one-to-one patient relationship.
Mistakes that cost the most time
Searching only LPN or only LVN
The same licence carries different names by state — LVN in California and Texas, LPN almost everywhere else. A search using one term returns essentially nothing in the other market. This is the single most common and most easily avoided error with this role.
Ignoring state scope of practice differences
What an LPN may legally do varies by state and setting, particularly around assessment, IV administration, and initiating care plans. A facility assuming national uniformity may hire someone who cannot legally perform a core duty, or may under-use a nurse who could. Verify locally, and check whether IV certification is separately required.
Missing the bridge programme dynamic
A substantial proportion of LPNs are working toward RN licensure, which shapes both recruitment and retention. Employers offering tuition assistance and scheduling flexibility around clinical rotations win these candidates on terms far cheaper than salary competition — and often retain them afterwards as RNs.
Assuming hospitals are the market
Acute care hospitals have largely moved away from employing LPNs, concentrating on RN staffing. The genuine LPN market is skilled nursing, long-term care, assisted living, clinics, and home health. Recruiters applying a hospital-nursing mental model to this role look in the wrong places entirely.
Underestimating how much schedule drives moves
LPNs leaving facility work almost always cite schedule — nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime — before pay. A weekday clinic role with no weekends is genuinely attractive even at similar compensation, and pitching it on hours converts far better than pitching it on salary.
Overlooking resident ratios in the pitch
In long-term care, how many residents an LPN is responsible for during a med pass is the defining quality-of-work issue and a major safety concern. Facilities with better ratios that do not say so in the advert are wasting their strongest recruiting argument.
Common questions
- What is the difference between an LPN and an LVN?
- Nothing substantive — they are the same licence under different names. California and Texas use Licensed Vocational Nurse, while the rest of the United States uses Licensed Practical Nurse. The education, licensing examination, and scope are equivalent. The practical consequence for sourcing is that a search using only one term returns almost nothing in the other market, which is the most common and most easily avoided mistake when recruiting for this role nationally.
- What can an LPN do that an RN cannot, and vice versa?
- The boundary varies by state and setting, which is why it must be verified locally. Broadly, registered nurses perform initial patient assessments, develop care plans, and handle more complex interventions, while LPNs provide direct care, administer medications, monitor patients, and report changes. Many states restrict LPN intravenous administration unless the nurse holds separate IV therapy certification. In long-term care, LPNs often carry substantial autonomy including charge responsibilities. Assuming a single national scope produces either illegal assignments or underused nurses.
- Where do LPNs actually work?
- Predominantly outside hospitals. Acute care has largely shifted to registered nurse staffing, so the genuine LPN market is skilled nursing facilities, long-term care, assisted living, memory care, physician clinics, and home health. Clinic roles are particularly sought because they offer weekday hours without nights or weekends. Recruiters who apply a hospital-nursing mental model to this role search the wrong settings entirely and conclude there is a shortage when they are simply looking in the wrong place.
- Why do LPNs leave their jobs?
- Schedule first, then ratios, then pay. Facility work involves nights, weekends, holidays, and often mandatory overtime, and LPNs moving to clinic roles routinely accept similar or slightly lower pay for weekday hours. In long-term care, the number of residents covered during a medication pass is the defining quality-of-work concern and a genuine safety worry. A third significant factor is progression: many LPNs are working toward RN licensure, and an employer that does not support that loses them at graduation.
- How should I recruit LPNs who are studying for RN licensure?
- By supporting the transition rather than ignoring it. A large share of LPNs are enrolled in or planning LPN-to-RN bridge programmes, and employers offering tuition assistance plus scheduling flexibility around clinical rotations win these candidates on terms that cost considerably less than competing on salary. The additional benefit is retention: an employer who supported someone through their RN often keeps them afterwards in the higher-licensed role, which solves two staffing problems with one investment.
The method behind the strings
Sourcing, in full.
Full Stack Recruiter devotes its first seven chapters to search: Boolean fundamentals, search engines beyond Google, research sources, contact discovery, and responsible public-source research. The titles change by role; the method under them does not.
