How to find a mechanical engineer.

The industry is the qualification, not the degree. A medical device engineer and an industrial machinery engineer have almost nothing in common day to day.

Mechanical engineering is general as a degree and highly specific as a job. Medical devices run on design control and documentation under ISO 13485 and FDA regulation. Aerospace adds AS9100 and often ITAR eligibility, which is a legal restriction rather than a skills question. Automotive has its own validation conventions and volume economics. These frameworks take a year or more to absorb regardless of engineering ability.

The second split is design versus manufacturing. Design engineers create the product; manufacturing engineers make it producible, owning process, tooling, yield and cost. Both are mechanical engineers, both answer the same advert, and design engineers who have never owned a production problem routinely specify things that are expensive or impossible to make.

Most mechanical engineers never license, because outside building systems the work does not require sealing drawings. What actually filters is the software someone has produced deliverables in and the regulatory framework they have worked under.

Where mechanical engineers actually are

Software communities are the most efficient filter, because the platform indicates both capability and industry. CATIA and NX point toward aerospace and automotive; SolidWorks toward smaller product companies; ANSYS and Abaqus toward genuine analysis work. User groups, forums and certification listings segment the population in a way job titles cannot, and the same platform question works as a two-minute pre-screen.

Plant closures and cancelled development programmes are the event-driven source. WARN notices and trade press report them well in advance, and they release engineers with specific, hard-to-replace industry knowledge locally and on a known date. In aerospace and automotive especially, programme cancellations are widely covered and put experienced teams into the market together.

Patent filings are an underused verification tool. They name inventors, are dated, and describe the actual technical contribution - one of the few public records of individual engineering work rather than team output. Alongside them, ASME, SAE and industry-specific societies segment by application area, and building systems engineers, who hold the PE licences that matter in this profession, sit in a corner of the market that product-shaped searches never reach.

Mistakes that cost the most time

Engineers who can reason about tolerance stack-ups, datum schemes and the cost implications of tight tolerances are meaningfully scarcer than the CVs suggest, and this is directly testable with a drawing and a short conversation.
