Sourcing by role
How to find a plumber.
Licences do not cross state lines cleanly, and a construction plumber is not a service plumber. Both facts derail more searches than any sourcing technique fixes.
Plumbing searches fail on two structural facts that have nothing to do with finding people. The first is licensure: journeyman and master licences are issued by states and sometimes by individual cities, with partial reciprocity, so a relocating plumber may legally be unable to start for weeks.
The second is that service and construction plumbing are different jobs. One diagnoses faults in occupied homes and deals with customers directly; the other installs systems to drawings on a build schedule. The diagnostic and customer-facing combination is the scarcer one, and it does not develop automatically from installation experience.
Job titles worth searching
Grouped by what the person actually does, because searching all44 at once produces a result set you cannot triage. Decide which group you need first — that decision does more for the search than any string below.
Licence ladder
Legal categories rather than job titles, and the thing that governs everything else. Apprentices work supervised, journeymen work independently, and masters pull permits and supervise. Searching 'Plumber' alone returns all three plus handymen who are none of them.
- Apprentice Plumber
- Journeyman Plumber
- Master Plumber
- Licensed Plumber
- Plumbing Contractor
- Tradesman Plumber
Service versus construction
The split that decides fit. Service plumbers diagnose faults in occupied homes and deal with customers directly; construction plumbers install systems to drawings on a build schedule. Diagnostic ability and customer skill are the scarcer combination, and a construction plumber does not automatically have them.
- Service Plumber
- Service Technician
- Residential Service Plumber
- New Construction Plumber
- Rough-In Plumber
- Finish Plumber
- Repair Plumber
- Maintenance Plumber
Sector specialisations
Scale and code exposure differ sharply. Commercial and industrial work involves larger pipe, different materials, and process systems that residential work never touches. Industrial process piping is effectively a separate trade.
- Residential Plumber
- Commercial Plumber
- Industrial Plumber
- Process Piping Technician
- Institutional Plumber
- Marine Plumber
- High-Rise Plumber
Certified specialisations
Where certification gates access to the best-paid work. Medical gas installation requires specific certification and is genuinely scarce; backflow prevention testing is often a separate certification that many jurisdictions require by law.
- Medical Gas Installer
- Backflow Prevention Tester
- Gas Fitter
- Steamfitter
- Pipefitter
- Sprinkler Fitter
- Hydronic Heating Technician
- Water Treatment Technician
Drain and specialist services
Often a separate business line with its own equipment and skills. Drain technicians and camera inspection specialists may not hold full plumbing licences depending on jurisdiction, which is worth confirming before assuming they can do broader work.
- Drain Technician
- Drain Cleaner
- Sewer Technician
- CCTV Drainage Surveyor
- Trenchless Repair Technician
- Hydro Jetting Technician
- Leak Detection Specialist
Supervisory and UK terms
Where experienced plumbers progress, plus the UK vocabulary for the same trade. UK qualification uses NVQ levels and Gas Safe registration rather than the journeyman and master ladder, so US search terms return little there.
- Plumbing Foreman
- Plumbing Supervisor
- Plumbing Estimator
- Plumbing Project Manager
- Service Manager
- Gas Safe Engineer
- Heating Engineer
- Plumbing and Heating Engineer
Licences and certifications that gate the work
Plumbing is legally gated and the gate is issued locally. Beyond the main ladder, several well-paid niches require separate certifications that a general plumbing licence does not cover.
| Credential | Full name | Region | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Journeyman | Journeyman plumbing licence | US, state or city issued | Typically requires several years of documented apprenticeship hours plus an exam. Issued locally, and reciprocity between states is partial — verify the specific state pair. |
| Master | Master plumber licence | US, state or city issued | Additional documented hours beyond journeyman. Required to pull permits and supervise, which is why contractors need at least one on staff. |
| Backflow | Backflow prevention tester certification | US, varies locally | Frequently a separate certification with its own renewal, and legally required to test assemblies in many jurisdictions. A genuine differentiator. |
| Med gas | Medical gas installer certification (ASSE 6010) | United States | Required for healthcare facility gas piping. Scarce enough that holding it is close to a guarantee of work, and it commands a substantial premium. |
| Gas fitting | Gas fitting licence or endorsement | US and Canada, varies | Often separate from the plumbing licence. Determines whether the plumber may legally work on gas appliances and lines. |
| OSHA 10 / 30 | OSHA construction safety training | United States | Standard site access requirement on commercial and industrial projects. Common enough to be a baseline rather than a differentiator. |
| Gas Safe | Gas Safe Register | United Kingdom | Legally required for gas work in the UK, with a public searchable register listing engineer and qualification scope. A directly usable sourcing source. |
| NVQ Level 2/3 | UK vocational plumbing qualification | United Kingdom | The UK qualification route, usually alongside City and Guilds. 'Time served' and NVQ Level 3 are what a UK CV cites instead of journeyman status. |
Where plumbers actually are
Licensing boards are the strongest and least-used source. Most states and many cities publish searchable databases showing name, licence level, status, expiry, and frequently the employer of record — which verifies the credential by definition and removes the largest screening risk in the trade. Use these to identify and verify named candidates rather than to harvest lists.
For union work, United Association locals dispatch plumbers and pipefitters from the hall rather than through job adverts. A recruiter without that relationship has no realistic route to those candidates, and it is a relationship to build in advance rather than at the point of need.
Small contractors are highly visible on Facebook, Yelp, and BBB while being effectively absent from professional networks, which surfaces owner-operators who appear nowhere else — some of whom will trade the uncertainty of running a business for a stable salaried role. In the UK the Gas Safe Register is publicly searchable by engineer and qualification scope, making it directly usable for sourcing.
Boolean search strings
Written to be pasted as-is. Each one is built around an intent rather than a platform, since the useful question is what you are trying to find, not which site you happen to be on.
LinkedIn profiles, direct X-ray
Google (LinkedIn)site:linkedin.com/in/ ("master plumber" OR "plumbing foreman" OR "plumbing estimator") "{city}"Weak for working plumbers, who largely maintain no profile, and further limited by LinkedIn no longer indexing titles and locations. It does surface the supervisory end — foremen, estimators, project managers, and service managers who have moved into office-based roles. For field hiring, the licence databases and local listings below are the real channel.
Licensed plumbers via state licence lookup
Google(site:*.gov OR site:*.us) ("plumbing" OR "plumber") ("license search" OR "license lookup" OR "licensee") "{state}"State and municipal licensing boards publish searchable databases showing name, licence level, status, and often the employer. The credential is verified by definition, which removes the biggest screening risk in this trade.
Medical gas and specialist certified
Google("medical gas" OR "ASSE 6010" OR "backflow certified" OR "backflow tester") plumber "{city}" -jobs -course -trainingThese certifications gate the best-paid work and are scarce enough to search alone. Excluding 'course' and 'training' strips the certification providers that dominate the terms.
Service plumbers with diagnostic depth
Google("service plumber" OR "service technician") ("diagnostic" OR "troubleshooting" OR "repipe" OR "leak detection") -jobs -hiringService work requires diagnosis and customer interaction that construction plumbing does not develop. If the role is service, this experience is the requirement rather than general plumbing time.
Union plumbers through UA locals
Googleinurl:ua-local OR site:ua.org "local {number}" ("members" OR "dispatch" OR "apprenticeship")United Association locals dispatch union plumbers and pipefitters. If the work is union, the relationship with the local is the channel and no search string replaces it.
Small contractors on local listings
Google("plumbing" OR "plumber") "{city}" (site:facebook.com OR site:yelp.com OR site:bbb.org) -jobs -"now hiring"Small plumbing contractors are highly visible on local business listings and invisible on LinkedIn. Owner-operators sometimes trade the uncertainty of running a business for a salaried role, and are rarely approached.
Apprenticeship and trade school pipeline
Google("plumbing apprenticeship" OR "plumbing technology" OR "PHCC") ("graduate" OR "completion" OR "program") "{city}" (site:edu OR site:org)Apprenticeship programmes and PHCC chapters are the entry pipeline. Worth building as a standing relationship, since cohorts complete on a predictable schedule.
UK qualified plumbers and heating engineers
Google("Gas Safe registered" OR "NVQ Level 3" OR "time served") ("plumber" OR "heating engineer") "{city}" -jobs -courseThe Gas Safe Register is public and searchable, listing engineers with their qualification scope. It is the most directly usable sourcing source in the UK market for this trade.
Mistakes that cost the most time
Assuming licences transfer between states
Plumbing licences are issued by states and sometimes by individual cities, and reciprocity is partial and specific. A licensed journeyman relocating may need to sit an exam or document hours before working legally. Confirm the specific state or municipal pair before promising a start date, because this regularly delays starts by weeks.
Ignoring the service and construction divide
Service plumbers diagnose faults in occupied homes and manage customer interaction; construction plumbers install to drawings on a build schedule. The diagnostic and customer-facing combination is scarcer and does not develop automatically from installation work. A construction plumber placed in a service role often struggles with both the diagnosis and the customer.
Overlooking certification-gated niches
Medical gas installation and backflow prevention testing require separate certifications, are legally required for that work, and are held by a small minority of plumbers. These niches pay substantially better. If the role needs them, the certification is the search; if it does not, requiring it needlessly shrinks the pool.
Sourcing on LinkedIn
Working plumbers overwhelmingly do not maintain professional social profiles, because the trade hires through licences, union halls, referrals, and local reputation. LinkedIn reaches the supervisory and estimating end only. State licence databases and local business listings are where this trade actually is.
Treating union and non-union as one pool
Union plumbers are dispatched through United Association locals and generally cannot take non-union work without leaving the union. If the job is union, the local hall is the channel; if it is not, union members are largely unavailable. Recruiters who ignore this spend weeks pursuing candidates who could never accept.
Advertising without wage, vehicle, and on-call details
Plumbers compare hourly rate, whether a take-home vehicle is provided, on-call rotation, and how overtime is paid. On-call in particular is decisive in service work, where nights and weekends are part of the job. An advert omitting these is skipped, and a take-home van is often worth more to a candidate than an equivalent raise costs the employer.
Common questions
- What job titles should I search for when hiring a plumber?
- Search the licence level first — Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master Plumber are legal categories determining what someone may do. Then the work type, because Service Plumber and New Construction Plumber are genuinely different jobs requiring different skills. Sector terms such as Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Plumber describe different scales and codes. Certified niches use their own terms: Medical Gas Installer, Backflow Prevention Tester, Gas Fitter, and Steamfitter. In the UK the trade uses Gas Safe Engineer, Heating Engineer, and Plumbing and Heating Engineer instead.
- What is the difference between a journeyman and a master plumber?
- They are licence levels with different legal scope. A journeyman has completed a documented apprenticeship — typically several years of hours — plus an examination, and may work independently. A master has additional documented hours and can pull permits and supervise others, which is why plumbing contractors must have at least one on staff. An apprentice cannot work unsupervised. Both licences are issued by states and sometimes by individual cities, with only partial reciprocity between them, so a relocating plumber may need to test or document hours before starting.
- What is the difference between a service plumber and a construction plumber?
- Service plumbers diagnose and repair faults in existing systems, usually in occupied properties, working alone and dealing directly with customers who are often stressed. Construction plumbers install new systems from drawings, working in crews on a build schedule with more predictable conditions. The diagnostic ability and customer interaction skills that service work demands do not develop automatically from installation experience, which is why moving a construction plumber into a service role frequently disappoints. Establish which the role needs before sourcing.
- Which plumbing certifications are worth targeting?
- Medical gas installation certification, commonly ASSE 6010, is required for healthcare facility gas piping and held by a small minority of plumbers, which makes it both scarce and well paid. Backflow prevention tester certification is frequently separate from the plumbing licence and legally required to test assemblies in many jurisdictions. Gas fitting is often a separate endorsement determining whether someone may work on gas lines and appliances. In the UK, Gas Safe registration is legally required for gas work and is publicly searchable by engineer and qualification scope.
- Where can I find plumbers if not on LinkedIn?
- State and municipal licensing boards publish searchable databases of licensed plumbers with name, level, status, and often employer — verified credentials by definition, and the strongest source in this trade. United Association locals dispatch union plumbers, so if the work is union, the local hall is the channel. Small contractors are highly visible on Facebook, Yelp, and BBB listings while being invisible on professional networks. Apprenticeship programmes and PHCC chapters supply the entry pipeline on a predictable schedule, and in the UK the Gas Safe Register is directly searchable.
The method behind the strings
Sourcing, in full.
Full Stack Recruiter devotes its first seven chapters to search: Boolean fundamentals, search engines beyond Google, research sources, contact discovery, and responsible public-source research. The titles change by role; the method under them does not.
